We love masks - They can be real lifesavers in every season, and they don't have to cost the earth. Here are step by step instructions to a great DIY mask using something you may have in your kitchen cupboard... COCONUT OIL!
Step 1 - Which Coconut oil to use? Always go with an organic cold pressed oil - look for words like 'virgin' or 'cold pressed' on the label. You're looking at about £4 - £8 for a 750 ml jar.
Step 2 - Melt a tablespoon (a tad more if you have long or thick hair) in a pan on the hob. Once melted pour into a bowl to cool for a few seconds. It solidifies fast so don't hang about here!
Step 3 - Using your fingers, apply the oil to brushed, dry hair (wrap a towel around your shoulders in case of drips), starting at the tips and work your way up towards the root. Stop a couple of inches from the root.
Step 4 - Once you've worked the oil mask into your hair, secure the hair loosely with a hair band while you pop on a shower cap. Make sure the cap is well fitted as you don't want oil dripping out and heat escaping.
Step 5 - Now leave for as long as possible, it will need at least 30 minutes but if you have time to leave longer then do - even sleep in it if you can, but don't forget to cover your bedding with an old towel.
Step 6 - When you're ready, rinse with warm water and shampoo and condition as usual.
Ta Da - You're done!
Pro Tip - You may want to shampoo twice to make sure you remove all of the oil, you don't want the hair feeling clogged up and tacky. When properly washed out, you'll be left with silky smooth hair with a layer of protection to see off pollution and protect from any winter sun (we should be so lucky, but you never know)
